VP Retail Industry Strategy, JDA Software
I've spent my entire career in retail. Holding leadership roles in retail operations and supply chain, management consulting, and now retail software. I love to talk about, predict, and debate about what's next. Luckily there is never a shortage of topics to discuss.

Will the newest Walmart c-store concept be the one that sticks?

The issues that plagued their earlier attempts are the same challenges facing their newest c-store effort. Will they get the mix right? Customers are using the c-store and other small formats to "top off" their grocery needs, with the small formats moving to fresh and prepared foods much the way c-stores are used in the rest of the world. Can their supply chain support the small-format store? Low-efficiency piece pick is not their typical model. The wildcard is click and collect. Their remote pickup locations are expanding and the merging of the two will be interesting to watch.

Will Starbucks be the same without Howard Schultz as CEO?

It will be interesting to see if they've replaced the CEO with a COO and simply changed the CEO's title to Executive Chairman. It's hard to separate Schultz from the brand, similar to the transition from Gates to Ballmer at Microsoft. It's also hard to imagine that he won't still be the driver behind culture and innovation at Starbucks. I think that for Johnson to be viewed as credible he will have to come out quickly with innovation or performance that wows customers and Wall Street. Schultz will have to allow his new CEO to be the face of Starbucks sooner rather then later.

What does a record Cyber Monday foretell for the remaining holiday season?

A strong Cyber Monday on top of a strong Black Friday is a great sign regardless of the channel used. Given that discounting by retailers started earlier this year then ever before, you could argue that we might have seen diluted sales numbers. Hopefully we see two strong Saturday sales days leading up to a Sunday Christmas. The challenge for retailers will be getting the inventory in the right locations, those that have enabled buy online ship from store and pick up in store will be able to better react to a stronger then expected online versus store sales mix.
