Retailers were ripped-off to the tune of $10 billion last year and many security experts are advising vigilance for the busy holiday shoplifting season ahead, says an article in today’s Dayton (OH) Daily News.

“For many, the holidays are a season for giving. But for the shoplifter, it’s a season for taking,” said Pola Gupta, Ph.D., assistant professor of marketing, Wright State University. “It’s an important time for retailers, but also for the shoplifter.”

Moderator’s Comment: Two Questions–

  1. Do retailers need to modify their security procedures
during the holiday season to reduce shrink?

  2. What is your take on the Winona Ryder case?

The new poster girl for shoplifting, Winona Ryder, was
one of 622,000 caught in the act last year, according to Jack L. Hayes International,
a Florida consulting firm specializing in loss prevention.
