J.C. Penney surprises Wall Street with same-store sales and earnings beat

J.C. Penney posted a 13 cent gain in adjusted earnings per share in the fourth quarter, surprising analysts who forecast a net loss of six cents. The department store chain’s sales fell seven percent during the quarter, slightly better than the 7.3 percent expected by Wall Street.
