New $54 billion merger unites lens and frames leaders

French lens-maker Essilor International SA will merge with frame designer Luxottica Group SpA in a deal reportedly worth about 51 billion euro ($54 billion). The collaboration is seen as necessary in the increasingly competitive international market for eyewear and to prepare for the emerging “smart glasses” trend.
