Australian researchers have received a $600,000 grant from the Office of National Intelligence to explore the integration of human brain cells with artificial intelligence. Working with Cortical Labs, they have demonstrated the capability of brain cell clusters in a Petri dish to play “Pong.” The ambitious project aims to create AI systems that can learn throughout their lifetime, potentially surpassing the performance of silicon-based hardware and revolutionizing fields such as robotics, automation, brain-machine interfaces, and drug discovery.
