‘Toxic work environment’ leads workers to walk out of coffee shop

Five baristas working in a Slate Coffee Roasters shop taped their resignations to the front door and walked off their jobs in an effort to publicly shame their employer for issuing paychecks that were late and for creating a “toxic work environment.” The shop is one of five in Seattle owned by Lisanne Walker and her son Keenan. Ms. Walker acknowledged a late payment to employees but denied the working situation described by employees. She called the workers’ action a “coup.”
