Trump administration changes could reverse tip pooling ban in restaurants

December 6, 2017

If proposed changes are enacted by the Department of labor, the Trump administration will succeed in eliminating regulations imposed in 2011 by the previous administration that stopped restaurants from pooling waitstaff tips to be split, oftentimes with non-tipped employees, such as cooks, dishwashers and other back of house workers. The rule was put in place because many believe pooling gives management an opportunity to pocket money intended for workers. Proponents of the ban say it allows restaurants to compensate all its workers more equitably.
