Amazon Ends Drone Delivery in California, Here’s Where It’s Going Next
April 23, 2024
Amazon is ending drone delivery in California. However, the service is headed to a new location. Here’s where it’s going next.
According to Amazon’s press release, drone delivery is headed to Arizona. As part of the next stage of the program’s evolution, drone deliveries are headed to the West Valley of the Phoenix Metro Area of Arizona.
This new location will allow drones to deploy from Amazon warehouses and provide same-day delivery to the town of Tolleson. These smaller sites are not just fulfillment centers; instead, they are part fulfillment centers and part delivery stations.
This one-stop shop allows Amazon to get packages to its customers quicker than ever before. These same-day delivery sites offer millions of items for delivery.

However, Amazon has to take several critical steps before drone delivery can commence. The press release states that the company is working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local officials in Tolleson to obtain all necessary permissions to conduct deliveries via drone in the area. After the paperwork is settled, Amazon will inform customers that this exciting service will be available when it goes live in late 2024.
Juan F. Rodriguez, mayor of Tolleson, said, “As Amazon embarks on the national expansion of its Amazon Drone Delivery Program, we’re proud to have their innovative presence in our community. By bringing this service to new communities, they’re not just delivering goods; they’re delivering opportunities and economic growth for all. Amazon’s commitment to innovation exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our city forward.”
Previously, Amazon offered drone delivery in College Station, Texas, and Lockeford, California. In 2023, in partnership with Amazon Pharmacy, drone delivery was also available for prescription medications to College Station residents.
However, the company revealed in the same press release that the delivery site in Lockeford, California, is closing. Customers in the immediate area will be served with traditional Amazon delivery instead. The company will continue to deliver in College Station, Texas, and will open further U.S. locations in 2025.
