Target’s Black Friday Promotions Exposed on TikTok
November 27, 2023
For Black Friday, Target released information about its sales promos that promised plenty of discounts. However, a recent viral TikTok video has drawn public attention, exposing the true authenticity of these supposed deals.
The video, shared by TikToker @djdowneygirl on Nov. 25, has already reached over 30 million views. In it, the user is seen navigating the aisles of her local Target, where she encounters a purported Black Friday deal for televisions.
To her surprise, both the regular and sale prices she found in the signage were exactly the same. Further clarifying her intentions in a follow-up video, @djdowneygirl shared that her visit to the store was initially for snack shopping. However, having seen similar revelations in other videos, she became curious and decided to investigate.
The videos have since sparked a tide of responses, most expressing dissatisfaction and deception. Some users even claimed to have found instances where the regular price was lower than the Black Friday deal.
Some examples of recent comments include:
- “The only sales I’m concerned about is groceries and gas.”
- “I see a lot of companies raise their prices just to lower it to the original price and say it’s a sale 🙄”
- “That’s why I didn’t go shopping anywhere. It’s been a gimmick for years!”
- “I’ve noticed everything was cheaper like 2 weeks ago than it was Black Friday 🤷🏻♀️”
- “I work at Walmart we did the same thing.”
- “Walmart did me one better two weeks ago I bought a Barbie for $12 and yesterday it was $22.”
- “I’m 51yo, found this out@ in my 20’s. Pay attention throughout the year. They know people are sleep walking through life.”
This social media phenomenon has shown that retailers leaving multiple prices via physical papers has led to confusion and skepticism from shoppers, and more transparency might be needed to bolster confidence in consumers.
