Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall: Steering Wheel Safety Issue

February 29, 2024

Chrysler has issued a significant recall affecting 338,238 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a potential steering wheel problem. This recall encompasses a range of models, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee L from 2021 to 2023 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2022 to 2023. The issue stems from damaged upper control arm (UCA) pinch bolts, which could result in a loss of steering control.

This recall is not limited to the United States — vehicles in Canada, Mexico, and other international markets are also affected. A total of 338,238 vehicles worldwide are subject to recall. The problem arises from the assembly process, where some vehicles may have been fitted with damaged pinch bolts. If these bolts break, it could lead to the separation of the UCA from the knuckle, causing the steering wheel to shift unexpectedly and potentially resulting in accidents.

Chrysler has stated that the remedy for this issue is not yet available. However, the company plans to initiate the recall process in the second quarter of 2024. Vehicle owners can expect to receive a notification around April 12. Upon the commencement of the recall, Chrysler dealerships will inspect and replace the UCA pinch bolts free of charge.

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, Jeep, and Fiat, emphasized the importance of addressing the issue promptly. Although no injuries or accidents related to this problem have been reported, customers are advised to follow the instructions provided in their recall notices. Symptoms of the faulty bolts may include abnormal noise or vibration while driving over bumps.

Chrysler estimates that approximately 1% of the affected vehicles have the defective pinch bolts. The company’s proactive approach aims to ensure the safety and well-being of Jeep Grand Cherokee owners worldwide.
