The First Colorado Buc-ee’s Arrives in Johnstown

In the early hours of the morning, eager fans queued outside the expansive new Buc-ee’s travel center, their excitement palpable as they awaited the grand opening. As the clock struck 6 a.m., cheers erupted and the crowd streamed into the facility.
Buc-ee’s is synonymous with pristine restrooms and freshly prepared food, but before now, Coloradans could only experience these perks during journeys to other states, particularly Texas where the chain originated in 1982. However, the opening of this outpost marks its first foray west of Texas.
Families like the Cowins from Erie wasted no time exploring the offerings, starting with selecting souvenir T-shirts before delving further into the center. The allure of being part of the inaugural experience, coupled with spring break, drew them out bright and early.
Spanning 74,000 square feet and boasting 116 fuel pumps, the new Buc-ee’s in Colorado stands as a colossal presence along northern I-25, employing over 275 staff to ensure round-the-clock operation.
“The coolest part about it is you can get a brisket sandwich at this location 24-7, and it’s going to (be) fresh.”

Director of Operations Josh Smith commended the Colorado team’s adaptability to the Buc-ee’s culture despite initial unfamiliarity with the brand. This expansion, however, introduces competition with longstanding establishments like Johnson’s Corner truck stop, a Colorado staple since 1952.
Inside the travel center, visitors are greeted with an array of offerings, from snacks to a carving station boasting the chain’s renowned brisket. Pitmaster Randy Pauly, overseeing barbecue quality, emphasizes the importance of the staff’s dedication to crafting perfect dishes.
“We want to remember that we’re here to offer that safe environment for the family travelers. We want them to know that they’re going to be comfortable taking their kids. Mom can take the kids into the restroom and not have to worry about anything. It’s safe. Everybody in the car is going to be able to get something that they want without having to make five different stops.”
