Skimming Devices Detected at South Jersey 7-Eleven Stores
April 5, 2024
In South Jersey, recent alarming reports have surfaced regarding how skimming devices have been found at local 7-Eleven stores, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advice to residents.
Skimmers, deceptive in their appearance, resemble cases affixed atop credit card readers, posing a significant threat to personal financial information. They operate by clandestinely collecting the data from swiped credit and debit cards, similar to the skimmers encountered at ATMs and gas pumps. Once these devices steal credit card numbers, criminals will later retrieve these numbers to use at their disposal.
In Pennsauken, New Jersey, authorities revealed the discovery of a skimming device at a 7-Eleven on Westfield Avenue. Details surrounding the duration of the device’s attachment to the machine remain unclear, compelling investigators to piece together its timeline. This outlet is situated approximately 4 miles from another 7-Eleven in Cinnaminson, where a skimmer was recently spotted by a vigilant customer.
Similarly, in Cinnaminson, Burlington County, another 7-Eleven fell victim to a skimming device discovered on a credit card reader. The device, cunningly concealed within the internal card reader, was unearthed by a customer 10 days after its installation. Law enforcement officials are currently analyzing surveillance footage from March 22, which captures the installation of the device at 9:20 p.m.
In response to these incidents, authorities are urging customers to meticulously review their statements for any signs of fraudulent activity and promptly notify their banks of any suspicious transactions. Additionally, patrons are advised to exercise caution when utilizing gas pumps and ATMs, scrutinizing machine components for irregularities that may indicate tampering. The same vigilance should be applied when using card readers inside stores.
Amidst the prevalence of digital transactions, it’s imperative for individuals to remain vigilant against evolving threats to personal financial security. By staying proactive and alert, customers can play a crucial role in safeguarding their financial information from potential skimming attempts.
