Meta’s Threads Has 150 Million Monthly Active Users According to Mark Zuckerberg
April 25, 2024
Meta’s Threads, which entered the market to compete with the likes of X (previously known as Twitter), is growing at a robust rate. The social network has exceeded 150 million monthly active users, an increase from 130 million in February, as mentioned by Mark Zuckerberg during Meta’s Q1 2024 earnings call.
Following the previous quarterly earnings call, Threads has made significant progress in integrating with ActivityPub, the decentralized protocol used by networks such as Mastodon. In March, the company allowed users over 18 in the U.S. to connect their accounts to the Fediverse, enabling their posts to be visible on other servers.
On the earnings call with analysts, Zuckerberg said, “They’re now more than 150 million monthly active users and it continues to generally be on the trajectory that I hope to see.”
Contrary to Meta’s other apps and services, Threads currently does not feature advertising, which means Meta does not generate direct revenue from the app. This absence of ads is one reason why some users prefer using Threads, as it offers a more pleasant experience without interruptions.
The company has also announced plans to make its API available to a broad range of developers by June, enabling them to create experiences for the social network. Despite this, it’s not clear whether Threads will allow developers to create complete third-party clients.
Recently Meta launched its AI chatbot on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. However, Threads was missing from this rollout list, potentially because it doesn’t have native direct messaging features.
However, the Threads function is undergoing innovation and testing. In a post on Wednesday, the head of Instagram and Threads, Adam Mosseri said that Threads is currently experimenting with the feature to archive posts “with a small number of people.” Individual posts can be archived manually, but you can also automatically archive all posts after a certain time.
Mosseri shared that according to a poll of Threads users, they expressed a preference for this feature not to be enabled by default, so it has been included as an option instead.
