Nissan SUV Mysteriously Explodes in Front of Home
May 26, 2024
A Maryland family experienced a terrifying ordeal when their Nissan SUV spontaneously burst into flames in their driveway, waking them in the early morning hours. Vicki and Philip Hill, along with their three young children, were jolted from their sleep by the sound of exploding airbags as the vehicle erupted into fire on May 14, just before 6 a.m.
The dramatic incident was captured on the family’s doorbell camera, showing the SUV beginning to smoke and then bursting into flames. The Hills quickly evacuated their home, fearing the fire might spread and cause further damage. Vicki Hill noted that if the vehicle had been parked in their garage, which is adjacent to the gas line, the situation could have been even more catastrophic.
First responders arrived promptly and extinguished the blaze, leaving behind a charred skeleton of the SUV and shattered glass from the explosion. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the Hills suspect it may be related to a known issue with the vehicle’s braking system. The ABS actuator pump seal, which they had previously serviced, has been recalled by Nissan in certain models from 2015 to 2019 due to potential leaks that can lead to electrical problems and fires. It is unclear whether the Hills’ SUV was part of this recall.
The family recounted the harrowing moments to FOX 5, expressing their fear and urgency to protect their children. Vicki Hill initially thought someone was breaking into their home, but her husband quickly identified the fire, prompting her to call 911 and ensure their children’s safety.
In response to the incident, Nissan stated that the safety of their customers is of utmost importance and that they have initiated an investigation into the matter. The company plans to reach out to the Hills to address their concerns. However, the family reported that Nissan indicated a technician would not be available to inspect the vehicle for another six to eight weeks.
