Volkswagen Reveals Electric Hatchback Teaser

June 9, 2024

Volkswagen has unveiled its first teaser for a new electric hatchback that promises to be both affordable and innovative. Dubbed the ID.1, this forthcoming vehicle is set to be the most budget-friendly EV in Volkswagen’s lineup, with a projected starting price of around €20,000 (approximately $21,700). However, there’s a significant catch: This enticingly priced model is earmarked exclusively for the European market, with no plans for a North American release.

Volkswagen’s strategy for the ID.1 aligns with the company’s broader push to make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible to a wider audience. This move is part of a larger trend in Europe, where there is growing demand for affordable, small EVs. The ID.1 is expected to hit the European market in 2027, a year after the production launch of the ID.2.

The teaser offers a shadowy glimpse of the ID.1’s design, hinting at a compact and modern aesthetic. While specifics about the vehicle’s dimensions and powertrain remain under wraps, it’s anticipated to be even more compact than Volkswagen’s ID.2all concept, which was introduced in March 2023. The ID.2all measures about 230 mm shorter than the Golf GTI and features a front-wheel-drive system powered by a 233-horsepower electric motor.

While the ID.1 is poised to capture the European market with its competitive pricing and compact design, its prospects in North America are less certain. Small cars typically face a challenging market in Canada and the U.S., where consumer preferences lean towards larger vehicles. This market trend likely influenced Volkswagen’s decision to restrict the ID.1 to Europe.

The ID.1 will be manufactured at Volkswagen Group’s plant in Spain, which will also produce several other small EVs, including a compact SUV from Skoda and additional models under the Volkswagen and Cupra brands. These vehicles will utilize Volkswagen’s MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform, known for its versatility and efficiency in EV production.
