Buybuy BABY Closing All Stores One Year After Relaunching Brand

October 21, 2024

For the second time in one year, Buybuy BABY is closing its brick-and-mortar stores.

The baby clothing and gear retailer is shuttering again after first closing in 2023. The company initially went out of business in Summer 2023 along with its parent company Bed Bath & Beyond after filing for bankruptcy in April of the same year.

At that time, 360 locations shut down across the United States and Canada. All store inventory was liquidated.

In a banner located on its website, Buybuy BABY stated there are discounts upwards of 30% to be had on all in-store items. All sales are final, no returns will be available. The map showed 10 stores located on the east coast.

In a statement provided to Retail Dive, the company explained its transition: “The demand of consumers has changed, and as such, so are we. Based on the feedback from our loyal customers, we are shifting away from the brick-and-mortar model for the near future and redefining ourselves as a digital-first brand.”

Buybuy BABY Is Transforming Into a Digital Brand

Buybuy BABY is transforming into a digital-first brand explained the FAQ portion of its website. They plan to refocus their brand on “providing an exceptional online shopping experience.”

A statement claims, “This decision comes after listening closely to you, our incredible customers, and our valued partners. Your feedback has been invaluable in shaping this new chapter. With this shift, we’ve come to the difficult decision of closing our physical stores before the end of the year. We understand this may be disappointing news, and we want you to know this wasn’t a choice we took lightly.”

Thus, all Buybuy BABY store locations began closing sales on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024. Stores will be accepting Buybuy BABY gift cards as payment through Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024. There is no longer the option to buy online and pick up in-store, nor are there any more military or twin discounts. All baby registries will still be available on buybuybaby.com and items can still be purchased from those established gift lists.

Following, customers who still have gift cards can use them online at buybuybaby.com. The company’s website will continue operations and customers can continue to shop for all their favorite baby products online.

Bed Bath & Beyond bought Buybuy BABY in 2007. The price? $67 million and $19 million in debt repayment, according to Retail Dive.
