British Airways Cancels All Fights Between New York and London Airport Until 2025
October 28, 2024
British Airways has canceled all flights between New York and London’s Gatwick Airport until 2025.
Gatwick is the UK’s second busiest airport, and its service to New York will be suspended from Dec. 12, 2024, through Mar. 25, 2025. Per The Standard, around 103 transatlantic trips have been canceled due to delays in Rolls-Royce delivering their Trent 1000 engines, which are fitted to BA’s 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
In a statement to The Standard, a British Airways spokesperson said, “We’re disappointed that we’ve had to make further changes to our schedule as we continue to experience delays to the delivery of engines and parts from Rolls-Royce — particularly in relation to the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines fitted to our 787 aircraft. We’ve taken this action because we do not believe the issue will be solved quickly, and we want to offer our customers the certainty they deserve.”

The statement concludes, “We’ve apologized to those affected and are able to offer the vast majority a flight the same day with British Airways or one of our partner airlines. We continue to work closely with Rolls-Royce to ensure the company is aware of the impact its issues are having on our schedule and customers, and seek reassurance of a prompt and reliable solution.”
British Airways Hopes for a Record-Breaking 2025
The delay in air transportation between New York and London’s Gatwick Airport comes on the heels of a Sept. 12, 2024, British Airways announcement, which states that the airline is planning a record-breaking number of flights to North America in the Summer of 2025. The planes will fly out of London to the United States, Canada, and Mexico in Summer 2025, offering more than 400 direct flights per week during its peak weeks.
The airline revealed that it is booking an additional seven flights per week to Miami, Florida, totaling 14 flights weekly, and twice-daily service to the Sunshine State. British Airways will also open a new airport lounge in Miami sometime in 2025.
BA will also fly to Austin, Texas, 13 times a week, adding an extra six flights to its roster, and Las Vegas, Nevada, will gain an extra three flights, bringing its weekly total to 10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will add one additional flight per week for a total of seven. For travelers headed to Washington, D.C., seven more flights are added, totaling 21 a week, and finally, for those headed to Vancouver, Canada, there is an increase of seven flights, bringing the airline’s total to 14 per week during the peak summer season.
Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ chief planning and strategy officer, said in a statement, “The US remains a priority market for us, and we know these network changes will be welcomed by both our business and leisure customers, providing more options than ever before to travel between the UK and the USA.”
