Costco Is Opening New Store Locations in 2025. Here’s Where They’ll Be

December 26, 2024

Costco continues to surge in popularity, which is why the retailer has announced that it will be opening new store locations in 2025. These new additions will bring the total number of stores throughout the United States to over 900. Here’s what we know about the new locations.

Costco Is Opening New Locations

According to USA Today, Costco has already announced six new stores that will open early next year. These locations, with opening dates in some cases, are as follows:

  • Brentwood, California
  • Genesee County, Michigan
  • Highland, California
  • Prosper, Texas (March 14)
  • Sharon, Massachusetts (March 1)
  • Weatherford, Texas (March 15)

All of the new expansions are expected to debut in March 2025, bringing the membership warehousing giant’s global footprint to over 900 locations.

California, where Costco launched its 897th shop in Pleasanton on Nov. 27 and thousands camped overnight to be among the first to enter, will host two of the new locations, while Texas will host two. In a call with investment analysts earlier this month, CEO Ron Vachris stated that the Pleasanton opening set a new Costco record for the highest-ever first-day sales for a U.S. warehouse at $2.9 million.

During its fiscal year 2025, which ends on Aug. 31, 2025, the corporation plans to open 29 new locations. Three of those will be relocations, while 26 will be new constructions. Earlier this month, Vachris announced that 10 of the new sites would be outside of the United States.

According to him, Costco opened seven new buildings during the first quarter of its fiscal year 2025, which ended on Nov. 24. Four of these structures were located outside of the United States, and one of them was a move from an old retail location.

The Big-Box Store Rejected Teamsters’ Demands

Despite the company’s increased expansion, the retailer may be in hot water with the Teamsters. Earlier this month, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters charged the big-box store with violating union agreements and warned that a strike was looming.

The union charged Costco with unfair labor practices for ejecting union representatives, intimidating and harassing workers for wearing Teamster buttons and clothing, and changing the locks on union bulletin boards to prevent future updates. Nationwide, 18,000 Costco employees are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

Since the current contract, which was adopted in October 2022, is set to expire in seven weeks, the union is negotiating for paid family leave, a thorough bereavement policy, sick leave, protections against surveillance, and important language on seniority. If Costco fails to establish a collective bargaining agreement by Jan. 31, union employees will go on strike.

“As Costco’s stock and executive bonuses reach record highs, Teamsters who make the company run are being left behind,” the Teamsters said in a statement. “Costco Teamsters are united in their fight for an industry-leading contract that halts the company’s corporate backslide, secures wages that keep pace with inflation, and paves the way for nonunion Costco workers to join the Teamsters without threats or intimidation from management.”

“The clock is ticking, and instead of engaging seriously at the bargaining table, Costco continues to waste time with surface bargaining,” added Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. O’Brien issued a statement following the retailer’s rejection of 98% of the demands made in the initial bargaining proposal.

The store was shut down for the entire day on Christmas Day as part of a planned “retail blackout.” Despite the fact that many retailers close on Christmas, it remains the busiest shopping season of the year.

To provide staff the opportunity to spend time with their loved ones at home on Christmas Day, the warehouse club shuttered all of its hundreds of sites across the United States for the whole day.
