Onion Recall: FDA Issues Class II Recall for 150 Types of Popular Vegetables Nationwide
December 31, 2024
The FDA issued a nationwide onion recall affecting pre-packaged vegetables made by Gracie’s Kitchen.
Newsweek reports that the recall affects almost 150 of the Connecticut-based company’s ready-to-eat fruit and vegetable items, such as watermelons and peppers. The cause of the recall is possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
On Nov. 27, the company began a voluntary recall of onions and other vegetables and fruits, and on Dec. 30, the FDA classified the recall.
Gracie’s Kitchens, King Cullen, and Wild By Nature are the three brand names under which the food and vegetable products were offered for sale at supermarkets in New York and Connecticut. According to the FDA, the items are classified as Class II.
When there is a remote chance a product will cause a serious health consequence that is short-term or medically reversible, the FDA issues a Class II recall.
Despite not being as urgent as Class I recalls, these recalls are nonetheless important and are handled carefully to avoid any possible injury.
“This recall is being initiated after sampling indicated that Listeria monocytogenes was found in the environment. The firm is working with the FDA,” the FDA confirmed in a statement to the outlet.
Onion Recall Is the Latest Nationwide Food Recall
The onion recall from Gracie’s Kitchen is just the latest nationwide food recall. Just last week, a nationwide pork recall affected more than 10,000 pounds of product.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced two separate recalls for cooked and raw pork products sold in four U.S. states. Customers in Oklahoma who purchased ready-to-eat bologna products under the Ralph’s Circle R brand were impacted by the first recall. The second pork recall affects Old World Italian Sausage retailers and restaurants in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
The USDA advises against consuming “Old World Sausage” that was purchased from a deli counter between Oct. 2, 2024, and Dec. 19, 2024, under an unidentified brand. Instead, they ought to throw it out or return it to the retailer for a full refund.
