Delta Air Lines Jet Narrowly Avoids Collision With Plane Carrying Popular College Basketball Team

January 2, 2025

A Delta Air Lines jet narrowly missed colliding with a plane carrying the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team at Los Angeles International Airport on Dec. 27, and the FAA is now investigating what happened.

According to PEOPLE, in a video from the event on Dec. 27, air traffic controllers can be seen ordering Key Lime Air Flight 563, a private jet, to halt as it continues to cross the runway where Delta Flight 471 is taking off.

The FAA confirmed that the incident happened at Los Angeles International Airport at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time.

“Air traffic controllers directed Key Lime Air Flight 563 to hold short of crossing a runway at Los Angeles International Airport because a second aircraft was taking off from the runway at the time,” the FAA told PEOPLE in a statement. “When the Embraer E135 jet proceeded to cross the hold bars, air traffic controllers told the pilots to stop. The jet never crossed the runway edge line.”

The video shows the Delta Air Lines plane taking off as an air traffic controller in the background yells, “Key Lime, stop, stop, stop!” to the taxiing flight.

The plane safely climbs off the runway as the airplane carrying the Spokane, Washington, university team members stops.

“Delta flight 471 operated as normal, and we are not aware of any communication from the FAA regarding this flight. We are cooperating with aviation officials on their investigation,” the airline said in a statement shared with the outlet.

Delta Air Lines Previously Came Under Fire Over First-Class Dog

Last month, Delta Air Lines came under fire from a first-class passenger, who claimed he was displaced from his seat by a pampered pooch.

An anonymous traveler complained on Reddit on Saturday, Dec. 21, that he “just got downgraded for a dog.” In an attempt to win over other Redditors, he even shared a picture of the offending four-legged cutie.

“I got upgraded to first this morning, only to 15 mins later get downgraded (to a [worse] seat than I previously had),” he wrote. “I asked the desk agent what was going on and she said, ‘Something changed.’ I then board only to see this dog in my first-class seat … And now I’m livid.”

The dog was a service animal, as it turned out, and the airline must make accommodations for these passengers in accordance with Delta Air Lines’ policy.

“Delta teams are aware of the customer complaint and are researching the details of what may have occurred,” the airline said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Service animals are routinely accommodated on Delta without impacting customer seat assignments.”
