Chocolate Recall at Highest FDA Level: All the Details

February 3, 2025

In mid-December 2024, Cal Yee Farm LLC of Suisun Valley, California, announced a recall of chocolate and yogurt-covered products, trail mix, and butter toffee due to undeclared milk, soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C #6, and almonds. Now, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed that recall at its highest level.

Consuming these products could adversely affect customers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C #6, or almonds. There is a risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if any of these products are consumed.

Per the FDA, the recall was initiated following a facility inspection that revealed certain products were distributed in packaging that failed to disclose the presence of multiple allergens.

Cal Yee Farm products were distributed in California, Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio, and Pennsylvania through retail stores and online at www.calyeefarm.com. The recalled items were packaged in clear plastic zippered pouches in 8-ounce, 1-pound, 2-pound, and 5-pound sizes with a bright yellow label identifying the product in front of the pouch and a small white label containing a UPC on the back of the pouch. The UPCs are listed on the FDA’s website.

The New York Times reports that Cal Yee Farm said the labeling problem has been subsequently fixed. The recall was reclassified as Class I, which places the product among major food allergens. Major food allergens include milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

Consumers with questions may contact Cal Yee Farms at 707-425-5327 or mariatmail03@gmail.com from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday.

The FDA Recently Reclassified Another Snack Food to Its Highest Level

On Jan. 27, 2025, a recall of Lay’s Potato Chips was elevated to the FDA’s highest level of classification. Initially, Frito-Lay issued a recall on Dec. 16 for 6,344 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. The chips were distributed to various stores in Oregon and Washington.

The UPC labels are 28400 and 31041. The recalled chips must have both a guaranteed fresh date of Feb. 11, 2025, and one of the following two manufacturing codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx.

Frito-Lay recalled the products due to an undeclared milk allergen. “Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product,” the FDA said on Dec. 16.

Oregon and Washington residents with any questions or concerns can contact Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 1-800-352-4477 between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday. Anyone who is allergic or sensitive to milk should avoid eating the chips and throw out any affected bags.
