Roomba Maker, iRobot, Releases New Models Despite Uncertainty About Future

March 12, 2025

In 2002, consumers were amazed by a little robot named Roomba that could vacuum the floor without human intervention. Now, it seems, consumer demand has waned, and competitors are pushing out robot vacuum clones priced substantially less than the original. As such, iRobot, the maker of Roomba, has “substantial doubt” about the future of the company.

Earlier today, iRobot’s leadership said it’s looking into all avenues to move the business forward, hinting at a potential sale or refinancing of debt. There is some speculation that shutting down entirely is also on the table, according to The Verge.

Despite an unpredictable strategy for staying afloat, iRobot did release eight new models this week. Nonetheless, the company is uncertain the updated products will positively impact the bottom line. With tariffs looming, competition increasing, consumer demand possibly weakening, and other macroeconomic conditions threatening, there is “no assurance” new Roombas will reinvigorate iRobot, per CNBC.

In the last quarter of 2024, iRobot’s income dropped 44%, falling from Q4 2023’s $307 million to $172 million. In addition, the tech company laid off just over half of its workforce last year.

iRobot CEO Gary Cohen injected some enthusiasm into the otherwise negative outlook. According to him, the “breakthrough new products” have better profit margins than previous versions and should enhance revenue growth in the coming year.

“As we move ahead, we will continue to take decisive action to reclaim our position as the industry leader and build on iRobot’s strong foundation centered around our globally recognized, iconic brand, Roomba,” Cohen explained in a statement.

Among the new Roombas are models that can mop and self-empty, with a couple that can do both. All new Roombas have a smart mapping feature, which gives it the ability to remember where walls, furniture, and appliances are situated in the environment. In a broad departure from earlier Roomba options, white is now an available color.

Prices for iRobot’s new Roombas start at $299 and can go as high as $999 depending on the premium options chosen. With various price points and advanced features designed to fit most budgets, the tech firm may just take back some of the market share lost to low-priced rivals and again take top position among robot vacuum cleaners.
