Disney Cruise Line Rolls Out Its Largest Ship, the Adventure, Becoming Third in the World To Reach 200,000 Gross Tons
April 27, 2025
The Disney Cruise Line Adventure, a massive ship weighing in at more than 200,000 tons, was officially unveiled in Wismar, Germany, on April 19.
Plans for the Adventure’s unveiling first came out in October 2024, with the House of Mouse promising world-class experiences and Broadway-style entertainment. Now, however, The Maritime Executive is reporting that the ship was officially floated out earlier this month.
Captains Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse were present, along with pyrotechnics. The cruise ship will be the largest in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and the company’s first to be based year-round in Asia. It serves as the starting point for a significant expansion initiative.
With Disney Adventure, the cruise line has become the third in the world to have a cruise ship larger than 200,000 gross tons. While it will be unique, it will be the fourth-largest ship in its class, following Royal Caribbean International’s Icon and Oasis classes and MSC Cruises’ World Class. Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line have recently purchased identical ultra-large cruise ships from Fincantieri for delivery between now and the 2030s.
Disney purchased the unfinished cruise ship from the bankrupt MV Werften Shipyard in November 2022 for an estimated €40 million (roughly $46 million), with an agreement to finish the building in Germany.
Disney Cruise Line Is Adding More Ships to Its Roster
In August 2024, Disney Cruise Line announced that it was adding four new ships to its roster, one of which was the Adventure.
These four new ships will increase the fleet to 13. These cruises are recognized for providing travelers with the Disney experience, which includes wonderful meals, shopping, full-length shows, and other onboard activities.
“At Disney Experiences, Imagineers dream, create, design and build these stories into real places. And we have Imagineers in place right now all around the world because everything we’re going to share with you is in active development. Plans are drawn. Dirt is moving,” Josh D’Amaro, the chairman of Disney Experiences, said.
D’Amaro also revealed that “Disney Hercules” will premiere on the Disney Destiny in 2025 as the hallmark production. He also showed a first peek at a new rendering from “Disney: The Tale of Moana,” which debuted on the Disney Treasure at the end of 2024. D’Amaro explained at the time that this aboard stage show derived from the iconic animated picture will feature a 15-foot-tall puppet of the fiery Te Kā.
