Popular Costco Salsa Recalled: Here Are the Details
April 30, 2025
A popular Costco salsa has been recalled from store shelves.
Per a press release, San Juan Salsa Co. was informed by its supplier, SupHerb Farms of Turlock, California, that out of an abundance of caution, a recall should be placed on some of its salsa products, including those sold at Costco. The company voluntarily recalled one lot of its large-cut cilantro, which has the potential to be contaminated with small wood particles from a crop previously grown in a field utilized by SupHerb.
The affected cilantro was included in the production of SJS’s salsa products between Dec. 19, 2024, and March 17, 2025. The following is a list of the products that may have been affected and their best-before dates:
- Mild Salsa, March 3 to May 23, 2025
- Medium Salsa, Feb. 27 to May 22, 2025
- Hot Salsa, March 3 to May 23, 2025
- Traditional Salsa, Jan. 29 to April 23, 2025
- Pineapple Mango Salsa, March 24 to May 23, 2025
- Verde Salsa, Jan. 21 to April 14, 2025
- Mens Room Roasted Red Salsa, March 18 to May 22, 2025
- Costco 32 oz. Medium Salsa, Feb. 27 to May 22, 2025
SJS stated in the press release that it has not used the affected lot in production since March 17, 2025. However, the company has notified customers so they can return the salsa to the point of purchase or discard it entirely.
There's an active recall on eight salsa products sold at select Costco locations due to a possible contamination. https://t.co/lRkha5WfKG

How Does Costco Handle Product Recalls?
Costco employs a comprehensive approach to managing product recalls. It prioritizes customer safety and transparency.
- Recall notifications: When a product is recalled, the company promptly updates its recalls and product notices page with detailed information about the affected items. This includes product descriptions, item numbers, and instructions for customers. For recalls older than 120 days, customers can refer to the past recall notices archive.
- Direct member communication: Costco utilizes its membership database to inform customers who have purchased recalled products. Notifications may be sent via email, phone calls, or mailed letters, ensuring that affected members are promptly alerted. This targeted approach helps in reaching customers directly and efficiently.
- Return and refund process: Customers who have purchased a recalled item can return it to any Costco warehouse for a full refund. If the product was purchased online, returns can be initiated through the Costco website. In some cases, if the product is no longer available, Costco may offer a replacement or alternative solution.
- Collaboration with regulatory agencies: Costco works closely with agencies like the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure that recall information is accurate and communicated effectively. This collaboration helps maintain high safety standards and compliance with federal regulations.
By maintaining transparent communication and providing clear instructions, Costco ensures that its members are well-informed and can take appropriate actions during product recalls.
