Disney Cruise Line Plans Full-Scale Galveston, Texas, Operation by 2026

June 1, 2025

Disney Cruise Line is setting its sights on the Gulf Coast with an aggressive expansion strategy that promises to transform Galveston into a year-round departure hub. Building on recent onboard innovations — like the Destiny’s bold new theme and the fan-favorite “Dine and Play” youth dining option — the line is now eyeing a dedicated, full-scale presence in Texas by the end of 2026.

A New Era for Galveston Departures

Currently offering only a handful of seasonal sailings from Galveston, Disney Cruise Line will ramp up to a full-time schedule in 2027, with planning and port preparations slated for completion by late 2026. Port Director and CEO of Galveston Wharves, Rodger Rees, confirmed to The Travel that Disney is in negotiations to base one of its largest vessels out of Galveston, marking a significant shift from its traditional Florida-centric itineraries.

Introducing the Global Dream

The centerpiece of this Texas push could be the massive cruise ship once known as Global Dream. Acquired by Disney in November 2022 after MV Werften’s parent company went bankrupt, the unfinished vessel is now slated for completion in Germany before transiting to the Gulf Coast, according to Galveston County News. Once retrofitted, the ship will offer:

  • A passenger capacity of up to 6,000
  • Accommodation for roughly 2,300 crew
  • A gross tonnage exceeding 200,000

These figures would position Disney to serve more guests per week than ever before, effectively doubling capacity on peak Galveston sailings.

Bolstering the Disney Cruise Line Fleet With New Builds

This move complements Disney’s broader fleet expansion. In August 2024, the cruise line announced four new ships, including the recently floated-out Disney Adventure, unveiled in Wismar, Germany, on April 19. Each of these vessels will feature signature Disney experiences: Broadway-style entertainment, immersive themed dining, and cutting-edge family programming. By 2027, Disney Cruise Line’s roster will grow from nine to 13 ships, solidifying its status among the world’s largest cruise operators.

Implications for the Texas Market

Full-scale operations in Galveston will not only benefit Disney’s bottom line but also provide a significant economic boost to the region. Increased port activity translates into more hotel stays, restaurant visits, and local tour bookings. For Texas travelers, the upgrade means easier access to Disney’s hallmark itineraries — whether exploring the Western Caribbean’s sun-soaked beaches or experiencing the magic at Disney’s private island in the Bahamas.

Disney Cruise Line Is Looking Ahead

As Disney Cruise Line accelerates its Texas plans, industry observers anticipate that Galveston will become its next marquee homeport. With construction timelines aligned for a 2027 debut and all preparatory work wrapping by 2026, the Gulf Coast is poised to welcome a new era of Disney cruising — complete with larger ships, expanded itineraries, and the same attention to detail that has made Disney Cruise Line a leader in family travel.
