Amazon Is Phasing Out Its ‘Just Walk Out’ Tech in Checkout-Less Stores

Amazon is bidding farewell to its “Just Walk Out” technology in its checkout-less grocery stores, as per a report by The Information. This technology, which relied on cameras and sensors to monitor shoppers’ items, is being phased out.
Initially hailed as a game-changer in grocery shopping when introduced in 2016, Just Walk Out stores allowed customers to skip traditional checkout lines by scanning a QR code upon entry. However, it was later revealed that over 1,000 human workers in India were behind the scenes, meticulously monitoring and labeling video footage to ensure accurate transactions.
Now, Amazon is shifting its focus to Dash Carts, equipped with scanners and screens integrated into shopping carts, enabling customers to pay as they shop. Additionally, self-checkout counters will be available in Amazon Fresh stores for non-members.
Despite the initial hype surrounding Just Walk Out, it faced several challenges, including delayed receipts and high operational costs. According to reports, a significant number of transactions still required manual review, falling short of Amazon’s internal targets.
While Amazon continues to experiment with innovative technologies, it remains committed to its grocery expansion efforts. With over 40 Amazon Fresh locations across the United States and ownership of Whole Foods, the company aims to establish a stronger foothold in the competitive grocery market.
Although Just Walk Out will be discontinued in most stores, Amazon plans to retain the technology in select locations, including some Fresh stores in the United Kingdom and Amazon Go convenience stores. Additionally, it plans to keep it going in several ballparks across the U.S. that have implemented the technology. This strategic decision reflects Amazon’s ongoing quest to evolve and refine its retail strategies.
As Amazon navigates the dynamic landscape of grocery retail, its departure from Just Walk Out may signify a shift toward more cost-effective solutions and a renewed focus on scalability and customer experience.
