Amazon Pharmacy Expands RxPass to Medicare Beneficiaries
June 18, 2024
Amazon Pharmacy has announced that its RxPass subscription service is now available to Prime members on Medicare, granting unlimited access to 60 eligible prescription medications for just $5 a month, along with fast, free delivery. This expansion means over 50 million Medicare beneficiaries can now benefit from this exclusive Prime member feature.
Amazon Pharmacy operates as a full-service digital pharmacy, providing clear, transparent pricing directly on its site and mobile app. Customers can see estimated insurance prices and shop for the best deals on their medications. RxPass offers a unique approach by not using insurance; instead, it covers the cost of eligible medications for a flat monthly fee, making it a viable option for customers with or without insurance.
Research shows that people often do not take their medications as prescribed due to cost, inconvenience, or accessibility issues. Programs like RxPass address these barriers by ensuring medications are both affordable and conveniently delivered, thereby improving adherence and health outcomes. With nearly 133 million Americans managing at least one chronic illness and a significant portion of the senior population on multiple medications, the need for such programs is critical.
Amazon Pharmacy’s initiatives, including RxPass and the Prime prescription savings benefit, are designed to support better health outcomes by reducing costs and increasing access to necessary medications. These programs offer up to 80% off the cost of generics and up to 40% off brand-name medications, making healthcare more affordable for Prime members.
Medications included in the RxPass subscription treat over 80 common conditions, such as high blood pressure, anxiety, and acid reflux. This service not only saves money but also eliminates the hassle of traveling to a pharmacy, which is particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues or those living in pharmacy deserts.
A Medicare beneficiary who takes at least one medication available through RxPass could save approximately $70 per year, with those on multiple medications standing to save even more. If all eligible Medicare beneficiaries transitioned their medications to RxPass, it is estimated that Medicare spending could be reduced by nearly $2 billion, significantly lowering out-of-pocket expenses for customers.
