Amazon workers at UK warehouse to strike during Prime Day event
July 10, 2023
Nearly 900 Amazon workers at a warehouse in Coventry, Britain will stage a strike for three days in the coming week over a pay dispute. The strike will take place from July 11-13, for two hours during the morning and two hours in the evening on the three days. It coincides with a “Prime Day” sales event the company has announced for July 11-12.
The workers are demanding a pay raise to 15 pounds ($19.25) an hour and union rights. Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce company, said that the minimum starting pay for its employees is between 11-12 pounds per hour, depending on the location.
The Coventry site does not directly serve customer orders and there will be no disruption to customers, Amazon said.
The strike is the latest in a series of labor actions by Amazon workers around the world. In the United States, workers at Amazon’s JFK8 warehouse in New York City went on strike in December 2021, demanding better working conditions and higher pay. The strike lasted for two weeks and ended with Amazon making some concessions to the workers.
The strike in Coventry is a sign that Amazon workers are increasingly willing to take action to demand better pay and working conditions. It remains to be seen whether the strike will be successful in achieving the workers’ demands.
