American Eagle Outfitters came up short in second quarter

American Eagle Outfitters posted earnings of four cents a share, below the 13 cents expected by analysts, even though its sales were in line with the Wall Street consensus. The retailer's margins were negatively affected by higher freight costs and increased promotional activity to reduce its inventory levels.
