Aramark Workers Strike Again at Wells Fargo Center

April 26, 2024

Aramark workers at the Wells Fargo Center have gone on strike to demand better wages and healthcare benefits. The strike began at 5 a.m., just hours before the Philadelphia 76ers are set to play the New York Knicks in a home playoff game tonight.

The workers, represented by the Unite Here Local 274 union, have been in contract negotiations with Aramark for several months. They are calling for a single contract covering all three venues where Aramark operates: the Wells Fargo Center, Citizens Bank Park, and Lincoln Financial Field. Currently, some full-time employees working over 40 hours a week do not receive full-time benefits due to separate contracts for each venue.

Lamont McDowell, a cook at both the Wells Fargo Center and Lincoln Financial Field, shared his personal experience, highlighting the lack of healthcare coverage despite working 47 hours per week. McDowell emphasized the urgency of his health needs, mentioning untreated polyps he hasn’t checked in years.

The workers announced the strike at a recent City Council meeting, receiving support from council members. The strike’s duration remains uncertain, with workers indicating it could last longer than a day, depending on Aramark’s response.

This isn’t the first time Aramark workers have taken action. On April 9, hundreds of workers held a one-day strike after failed negotiations. Despite resumed talks, workers felt Aramark wasn’t negotiating in good faith, offering only a minimal wage increase and trying to divide the workforce.

Aramark has acknowledged the strike, stating they are disappointed with the union’s decision before responding to the company’s latest offer. They have assured fans that contingency plans are in place to ensure uninterrupted services during the playoffs.

The workers’ demands reflect broader concerns about fair wages and access to essential benefits. As the strike continues, both parties remain engaged in negotiations, aiming to reach an agreement that addresses the workers’ concerns and maintains the fan experience at the Wells Fargo Center.
