As China Embraces Membership Stores, Sam’s Club Expansion Gathers Pace

Chinese shoppers are increasingly embracing membership club warehouses like Sam’s Club and Costco, leading to the expansion of these stores and the emergence of local rivals. Currently, there are 11 warehouse chains in China, with seven of them launching in the past three years, including outlets from local chains Yonghui Superstores and Alibaba’s Freshippo. The sector’s sales have more than doubled in the past four years, reaching $3.7 billion in 2022, according to Euromonitor data.
