Benadryl Emergency Recall: All the Details

March 21, 2025

Drug manufacturer Arsell has recalled about 2,300 bottles of liquid Benadryl due to a risk of child poisoning, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. But it’s not because the product is tainted.

The recall involves 100-milliliter bottles sold on Amazon.com between July 2023 and October 2024. The product was sold in a round dark plastic bottle with a pink and white label on the front with the word “Benadryl” in blue text. The code on the bottle reads: “X003VRIGUL.”

The reason for the recall is that the medicine was not packed in a child-resistant bottle. This poses a high risk of poisoning if the contents are accessed and inadvertently swallowed by young children.

Per the CPSC, “Consumers should immediately secure the Benadryl out of the sight and reach of children and contact Arsell for a full refund. Consumers will be asked to submit their Amazon order number and a photo demonstrating disposal of the recalled Benadryl to recall@arsellsupport.com. Only the bottle is being recalled, not the medicine itself, but both should be disposed of. All known purchasers are being contacted directly.”

The recall applies only to the specified product and does not affect other Benadryl items in the U.S. or Canada, which remain safe when used as directed.

A company spokesperson shared a statement regarding the recall with PEOPLE. They said, “We take the quality, packaging, and safety of our products very seriously, and always recommend medication be kept out of the reach of children. We are investigating this matter as the recalled lot of Benadryl Liquid Elixir is not authorized for sale in the United States.”

What Is Benadryl Used For?

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine used to treat allergies, hay fever, and the common cold. Per Medline Plus, the medicine helps relieve symptoms such as:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy or watery eyes
  • Itchy throat
  • Hives and skin rashes

It is also used for motion sickness prevention, insomnia, mild anxiety, nausea, treating insect bites and stings, and symptoms of the common cold. Benadryl can cause drowsiness, so it’s often used as a nighttime allergy relief medication. It’s important to follow dosage guidelines and consult a doctor if this or any medicine is used for extended periods or specific conditions.
