“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” Variety Wholesalers CEO Lisa Seigies said in a statement. “We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week, we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.”
On May 1, 55 other Big Lots shops will reopen, with two further rounds of reopenings scheduled “through early June,” according to a press release from new owner Variety Wholesalers.
The company stated that shoppers may expect “remodeled stores, a large selection of closeout deals and new merchandise categories, including apparel for the family and electronics.”
About 200 Big Lots Locations Are Under New Ownership
After filing for Chapter 11, Big Lots sought bankruptcy aid from Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, a Boston-based asset liquidation firm.
Big Lots also announced the closing of 545 of its 1,389 stores in January.
However, Variety Wholesalers has taken over 200 of the nearly 900 remaining locations. This applies to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, West Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Variety Wholesalers also owns Bargain Town, Maxway, Bill’s Dollar Stores, Roses Express, and Roses Discount locations.
After a valuation estimate of the bankrupt company’s items fell short of expectations, Nexus Capital Management could not make the sale financially viable despite efforts to negotiate an asset acquisition deal with Big Lots. However, these locations that remain open are now under this new ownership.
