Bill Gates Expresses Optimism for Nuclear Power Project

June 16, 2024

Bill Gates, the renowned Microsoft founder, recently shared his optimism about the future of a groundbreaking nuclear power project led by his energy company, TerraPower. Speaking on “Face the Nation,” Gates highlighted the strong bipartisan support for nuclear energy, which he believes will ensure the project’s progress regardless of political shifts in Washington.

Gates emphasized that nuclear power offers benefits beyond climate considerations, which has fostered bipartisan support. While Democrats appreciate its potential for clean energy, Republicans are interested in the energy security it provides. Gates noted that U.S. leadership and competitiveness in nuclear technology are crucial, as they prevent reliance on reactors built by adversaries and ensure strategic control over materials that could be diverted for military purposes.

This initiative is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first attempt in decades to establish nuclear reactors for commercial power in the U.S. Nuclear energy’s advantage lies in its ability to produce electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, making it an attractive solution for climate-conscious energy policies. The new plant is located next to the Naughton Power Plant, which plans to cease coal operations by 2026 and phase out natural gas a decade later.

The ambitious project, which broke ground in Kemmerer, Wyoming, last week, represents a significant advancement in nuclear technology. TerraPower’s innovative approach involves a nuclear power plant that uses sodium cooling instead of water. This method not only simplifies the process but also enhances safety, positioning nuclear energy as a potential source of low-cost electricity. TerraPower applied for a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in March for this advanced reactor, aiming to start power production by 2030.

One challenge TerraPower faced was sourcing uranium fuel, initially planned to come from Russia. Due to the geopolitical situation arising from Russia’s war against Ukraine, the project experienced a delay from 2028 to 2030. However, Gates assured that alternate suppliers from the United Kingdom and South Africa, along with future supplies from uranium mines in the U.S. and Canada, will meet the project’s fuel needs. He credited the federal government for assisting in securing these alternative sources.

Currently, China leads in nuclear reactor construction, but Gates is confident in America’s ability to compete through innovation. He expressed gratitude for the federal government’s support, which he believes will help the U.S. maintain its historical excellence in nuclear technology by addressing the high costs of existing reactors and fostering innovation.
