Chicken Broth Recall: Walmart Recalls Over 12,000 Cartons Due to Compromised Packaging
January 13, 2025
A chicken broth recall has affected over 12,000 cartons of a popular Walmart broth, with the retailer claiming that the recall was due to compromised packaging.
The New York Post reports that, according to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) press statement, the recalled product is the Great Value brand of chicken broth, which came in 48-ounce containers. Although the FDA posted the notification on its website on Jan. 8, the recall started on Dec. 11.
Walmart confirmed in a statement that 242 locations across nine states were affected by the chicken broth recall, despite the FDA’s declaration that the recalled cartons were transported to stores in Alabama and Arkansas.
The remaining states impacted were Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
The FDA’s statement outlines that the recall is due to “potential for packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage.” The chicken broth recall comprised 2,023 cases in total. With six goods in each case, 12,138 cartons of broth were recalled.
The recalled goods’ “best used by” date is March 25, 2026. Their UPC is “007874206684.” The recall notice did not mention whether any illnesses had been recorded as a result of consuming the chicken broth.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted products from the select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
Chicken Broth Recall is the Latest Recall
The chicken broth recall is the latest nationwide product recall to affect consumers. Last week, the FDA issued a recall of mashed potatoes found in a popular grocery store chain due to mislabeled ingredients.
The recalled 16-ounce packets of “Premium Home-Style Mashed Potatoes” included wheat that was not listed on the label, but Missouri consumers patronizing Dierbergs Markets were unaware of this.
The affected products, which are available for purchase at over two dozen Dierbergs Markets stores, are identified by their UPC number 231220006538, label ID number 92, and “sell by” date of January 9, 2025. The company said that all of the recalled products were taken off retail shelves.
