Christmas Day 2024: Which Stores Are Open & Which Are Closed?

December 20, 2024

Christmas Day is a holiday that is celebrated all over the world, even though it means different things to different people. But whether you need a last-minute gift or an emergency dozen eggs, you may wonder which stores are open and which are closed on Dec. 25. Let’s look at what we know.

Most Stores Will Be Closed on Christmas Day

According to NBC 5 Chicago, most stores nationwide will be closed on Christmas Day. The list of stores includes:

  • ALDI
  • Best Buy
  • Costco
  • Kohl’s
  • Macy’s
  • Meijer
  • Starbucks
  • Target
  • Trader Joe’s
  • T.J. Maxx
  • Walmart
  • Whole Foods
  • Woodman’s Food Market

However, a few select stores will be open on Dec. 25, though with limited hours. Walgreens is one of the few stores open on the holiday, with many locations open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Customers are urged to contact their nearest Walgreens to confirm the hours.

According to Taste of Home, most CVS stores will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Christmas Day, shorter than their typical 24/7 hours. However, customers should still contact their nearest location to confirm it will be open.

7-Eleven will maintain its normal 24/7 hours, even on Dec. 25. So, if you need an emergency gallon of milk, stop by your local 7-Eleven and be sure to thank the workers for sacrificing their holidays for your convenience.

Gas stations like Circle K, Wawa, and Speedway will also be open on the Most Wonderful Day of the Year, so feel free to stop by if you’ve run out of gas or just need to get away from all the forced togetherness for a little while (or, in the case of Wawa, you’re in the mood for one of their famous subs).

Costco Made Headlines When It Announced Its Closure for 24 Hours

Costco is one of the stores that will be closed for Christmas Day, and it made headlines when it was initially announced earlier this month.

On Dec. 25, the well-known big-box retailer will participate in a “retail blackout,” thus shutting down for the day. Even though many stores close to celebrate the holiday, Christmas continues to be the busiest shopping season of the year.

Costco is one of several chains that will be closed on Christmas.

The warehouse club will close its hundreds of locations across the United States for a whole day on Christmas Day to allow employees to spend time with their loved ones at home.

In addition to Christmas Day, the warehouses are closed on Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Most stores will be open on Christmas Eve from around 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. However, exact hours may vary by region. Customers should expect the store to be open from roughly 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Check with your local Costco, however, to confirm its exact hours, or check online for details.

Although the membership-based warehouse is still one of the most well-known retailers in the nation, it recently came under fire after having to recall around 80,000 pounds of its own brand of butter because one of the ingredients was missing from the label.

The distributor recalled 32,400 pounds of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter and 46,800 pounds of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter from its inventory, totaling about 79,200 pounds.

The Food and Drug Administration claims that both Costco products include cream. The recall is categorized as “Class II” because the products “may be missing the Contains Milk statement.” According to the FDA, a recall that “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” is called a “Class II” recall.
