CN Buys Iowa Northern Railway, Boosts Network

December 7, 2023

Montreal-based rail powerhouse, CN, has broadened its horizons with the latest acquisition of Iowa Northern Railway (IANR). This significant advancement links the established CN network with IANR’s approximately 275 miles of Iowan rail track, bridging the gap between Canadian and American rail systems.

IANR, with a strong presence in the upper Midwest, serves the agricultural and industrial markets, transporting a variety of goods, including biofuels and grain. The collaboration will not only fuel the growth of local businesses by “creating single-line service to North American destinations,” but it will also maintain existing carrier options.

The integration of these networks is a vital milestone for both parties. CN’s leadership remains excited about the potential operational synergies, new market opportunities, and a reinforced role in the essential supply chain. It also indicates a broadened scope for their southern network, promising a trajectory toward sustainable and profitable growth.

IANR also anticipates this collaboration to be fruitful. The organization believes that being part of CN will allow it to continue its reliable service to local customers and also offer them access to a more extensive network and market. Although the agreement details have not been made public, the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB) is currently reviewing the transaction. The decision about the deal is anticipated in 2024, with the agreement being held in an independent voting trust.

CN’s reputation as a global transportation leader and facilitator of trade is well-documented. It plays a crucial role in the economy and contributes to community prosperity, transporting more than 300 million tons of various materials across North America annually since 1919.

IANR, based in Waterloo, is an influential player in Iowa’s economic landscape. It provides necessary transportation resources to its served communities and has seen rapid growth, establishing itself as one of the fastest-growing independent shortline railroads.
