Columbus Walmart Shutdown Sparks Equipment Auction

May 11, 2024

A Walmart store in Columbus, Ohio, ceased operations due to underperformance and is now auctioning off its remaining retail equipment and merchandise. Located at 3579 S. High St., the store closed its doors in February, prompting a liquidation auction scheduled for Friday.

Items available for bidding range from cash registers, checkout counters, and display racks to electronics like flat-screen TVs, laptops, and tablets. Additionally, furniture, small appliances, and cleaning supplies are among the auctioned items.

The decision to close the store came after it failed to meet financial expectations, leading Walmart not to renew its lease. Despite the closure, the company expressed gratitude to its customers and assured continued service through other locations, online platforms, and delivery services.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our store on High Street in Columbus. We look forward to continuing to serve them at any of our many locations across the area, on walmart.com and through delivery to their home or business.”

All associates from the closed store were given the option to transfer, with payment extended through May 3. Severance packages were provided to eligible associates who chose not to transfer. The pharmacy staff facilitated the transfer of prescriptions to other Walmart locations.

Walmart clarified that no further closures are planned for the region, emphasizing its significant presence in Ohio with 170 stores and Sam’s Clubs, employing over 56,000 associates. Throughout fiscal year 2023, Walmart contributed substantially to state and local nonprofits in Ohio.

The Walmart store joins other central Ohio businesses in recent closures followed by equipment auctions, such as Oscar’s Restaurant and Bar and Mackenzie River restaurant. These auctions mark the end of an era for these establishments, signaling new opportunities and developments in the local business landscape.
