Communities Flock to 99 Cents Only Stores
April 8, 2024
Shoppers are flooding into 99 Cents Only Stores for a final stock-up before closure. With 143 locations in Southern California set to close, there’s a push to save them led by Mark J. Miller, CEO of Pic ‘N’ Save Bargains. Miller, along with a group of investors, aims to acquire the stores and maintain their commitment to the community.
The closure could have a huge negative impact on budget-conscious consumers who rely on the store’s affordable prices. One such consumer, Juan King, expressed concern. “Closing this down is a big discouragement,” said King. “It’s a sad time because this really means harder times for people who use this to help budget their little bit of finances.”
Miller emphasized a return to basics, aiming for a revamped 99 Cents store with better deals and a unique shopping experience. Efforts to save the stores are bolstered by elected officials like Los Angeles City Councilman Tim McOsker and Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. They’re exploring support options for affected employees, including job assistance and unemployment benefits.
McOsker has engaged the city’s Economic Workforce Development Department to provide resources for workers, while Hahn plans to introduce a motion for county support during the board meeting.
“I am worried about the thousands of 99 Cents Store workers across L.A. County who are going to lose their jobs, but L.A. County is ready to help. We have a department that can step in during an event like this and help workers with not only short-term assistance to get through this difficult time, but job training and support to help them get a better job.”

The community’s response to the closures underscores the significance of these stores in providing affordable goods to residents. As efforts to save them continue, the fate of 99 Cents Only Stores remains uncertain, but there’s hope for a solution that benefits both the business and its loyal customers.
