COVID-19 stimulus checks drove retail sales gains in January

Retail sales in January were up 5.3 percent as millions of Americans spent all or part of the $600 stimulus payments they received from the federal government. Sales, excluding autos, were up 5.9 percent during the month, well ahead of the 1.2 percent gain expected by economists polled by Dow Jones.
