Cracker Barrel Claps Back With Hilarious Response About Waffle House’s Egg Surcharge

February 7, 2025

Cracker Barrel has clapped back at Waffle House over its new surcharge on egg dishes with a hilarious and pointed response.

Cracker Barrel Takes a Subtle Swipe at Waffle House’s Egg Surcharge

TODAY shared a statement by a spokesperson for the beloved eatery regarding Waffle House’s new egg surcharge. Cracker Barrel stated, “A surcharge on eggs? Well, there’s nothing hospitable about that. At Cracker Barrel, country hospitality is as important to us as a hearty breakfast — and that means not charging extra for eggs.”

The eatery’s quick response comes after Waffle House announced that it would charge an additional 50-cent surcharge on all egg dishes. Waffle House’s extra uptick in price is related to several environmental factors that have caused egg prices to skyrocket for half a year and counting.

In turn, Cracker Barrel will continue to maintain its price point for dishes such as those on its beloved Breakfast All Day menu. Customers can order a Build Your Own Homestyle Breakfast consisting of two eggs, biscuits and gravy, and the choice of meat and a side. The cost? Just $10.69.

The restaurant chain also took a jab at Waffle House on social media. “Egg surcharges? Never heard of it. Order eggs and get double the pegs now through next Wednesday, 2/12. Available to all Cracker Barrel Rewards members,” said a statement on Cracker Barrel’s Instagram page.

Why Do Eggs Cost So Much?

Egg prices soar

The average price of a carton of eggs has more than doubled since 2019, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, and rose throughout 2024 as well.

Avian flu, inflation, and shifting demand are all partly to blame for this monumental price increase. In December 2024, the average price for a carton of eggs was around $4, compared with just $2.50 a year earlier. According to Forbes, the trio of issues plaguing consumers when it comes to buying eggs is compounded by some state regulations that require cage-free egg production.

The demand for eggs is also due to a public lifestyle shift as many consumers are relying on them as a cheaper protein source than meat products. Eggs are also a more affordable option for those who enjoy a protein-based diet.

Since 2022, farmers in the U.S. have been fighting against avian influenza, known as bird flu. Millions of poultry have been affected over the past two years. It’s continuing to spread, which means a continued shortage and rising prices. Thus, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that egg prices will continue to increase through 2025 by more than 20%.
