DirecTV Is Launching Streaming Service MyFree DirecTV in November

October 11, 2024

DirecTV is launching a new streaming service on Nov. 15. Named MyFree DirecTV, the service will have numerous free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels as well as an on-demand collection of various series, shows, and movies. DirecTV will use advertising revenue to fund the service, allowing viewers to watch without a payment or subscription.

Viewers will access the free service through various streaming devices, such as Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Roku as well as Google TV. MyFree DirecTV will also be available online and on mobile devices.

“I think we’re going to address that need in the market … to find high-quality free content and give customers that personalized and curated experience that’s going to set it apart,” said DirecTV’s head of product, Vikash Sharma, per USA Today.

A complete lineup of FAST channels has yet to be announced. However, DirecTV has suggested that networks A&E, Fox, and Disney may be providing some free content for MyFree DirecTV.

The Rise of FAST Channels

FAST channels represent a growing segment of entertainment since the launches of streaming platforms PlutoTV and Tubi roughly a decade ago. According to Nielsen, there are now over 1,900 individual FAST channels, with 1,300 of those based in the U.S.

The amount of growth in advertising revenue is potentially too good for DirecTV to pass up. In 2023, global advertising revenue from FAST channels reached $8 billion and is expected to rise to $17 billion in 2029, per Digital TV Research.

“We’re laser-focused on strengthening our investment in this area as we empower our advertising clients to reach new audiences with targeted and contextual solutions and innovative ad formats,” said Amy Leifer, chief advertising sales officer at DirecTV Advertising.

While DirecTV is getting into the free streaming service arena, it is also trying to become the largest TV provider in the U.S. In a proposed deal, DirecTV is attempting to buy competitor Dish Network. Should the merger be approved by government regulators, the new combined satellite TV company will have nearly 20 million subscribers.
