How Will Amazon’s Move To Corner Agentic Online Retail Play Out?
Amazon has been extremely aggressive as of late in promoting its agentic AI e-commerce solutions, with expansion of its Shop Direct platform to include a new merchant workspace dovetailing with the improvement of its Alexa for Shopping tool – and that same tool being integrated seamlessly into the newly launched Shop Direct Merchant Workspace.
In brief, Alexa for Shopping gained more than 100 new common shopping capabilities for users, as Retail Dive reported, while an Amazon News release from Jacquelyn Smith outlined that the company’s new self-service portal for merchants will allow them to leverage full access to customers through both the Alexa for Shopping tool as well as the Amazon website itself.
“Selection connected to Shop Direct may be displayed to Amazon customers in relevant searches and within Alexa for Shopping. Customers who are interested in learning more about a product or buying it can tap the ‘Shop Direct’ button on the product page to be directed to the merchant's store. They’ll receive a notification that they're leaving Amazon before being directed to the merchant site to see product details and complete the purchase,” Smith wrote, adding that the agentic “Buy for Me” tool will allow the purchase journey to be completed on the customer’s behalf.
And as for Alexa for Shopping’s upgrades announced just days before the introduction of the Shop Direct Merchant Workspace, these include the ability for customers to create and alter product registries, subscription management, management of delivery instructions, and immediate answering of queries around billing and payments.
That’s paying off already, according to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.
“U.S. customers using Alexa for Shopping are spending 50% more per order than those who don’t,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said to analysts during a Q3 earnings call. “Though we anticipate working with horizontal agents, we believe Alexa for Shopping is going to be the primary shopping agent customers use to shop Amazon.”
Amazon Makes its Position Clear, Keeping Competing Agents Away From its Turf
Amazon is seemingly dedicated to keeping competitors away from its turf as AI-driven discovery and checkout appear to be gaining traction, particularly the former portion of the purchasing journey. In September, Amazon requested that it be removed from the Muse AI experience – and Amazon sued Perplexity in 2025 after the e-comm giant found that Perplexity’s Comet AI was “accessing Amazon’s e-commerce site to make purchases for users,” as Retail Dive’s Dani James noted.
Amazon’s expansion of its existing Shop Direct capabilities to include a new Shop Direct Merchant Workspace appears to appeal to the countless merchants and vendors who are looking to be early participants in what appears to be a change in the way future generations will shop online. Whether shoppers will eventually grow more comfortable with allowing AI agents to move beyond discovery and into automated purchasing remains to be seen, as recent FirstPageSage data suggests.
“Customers are increasingly trusting Amazon and Alexa for Shopping as the place to start any shopping journey – whether what they're looking for is in our store or somewhere else on the web,” said Amanda Doerr, vice president of Core Shopping at Amazon.
“Shop Direct makes it simple for merchants to have their selection discovered by Amazon customers. We created the Merchant Workspace to make it fast and easy for merchants to be part of this growing experience using the catalogs they’ve already built for other shopping destinations,” Doerr added.
Questions for further discussion:
Do you think Amazon staking such a strong early claim on AI-driven e-commerce will discourage other major players from entering? Why or why not? How much does its head start matter?
How eager do you believe vendors or merchants will be to sign on with Amazon’s new solutions suite, including Alexa for Shopping and Shop Direct Merchant Workspace? How about shoppers, who may perhaps not be privy to the workings behind the scenes?
In your opinion, will other retailers and AI platforms team up to present a significant alternative to Amazon’s quickly expanding ecosystem? What hurdles must they clear?
