Lights To Go Out On 19 Circuit City Stores

By George Anderson

The nation’s second largest consumer electronics chain, Circuit City, announced it is closing 19 of its stores by the end of the month.

The chain has previously announced plans to slow new store expansion and focus on remodels to improve the shopping environment for consumers. It still plans to open up to 70
new stores this fiscal year.

Moderator’s Comment: Is there anything that should be read into Circuit City’s latest
store closings? What is your assessment of Circuit City’s approach to business and its shoppers?

It’s no secret that Circuit City has been losing ground to competitors from Best Buy to Wal-Mart. The company’s chairman, chief executive and president,
Alan McCollough has taken the approach of fixing what’s broke before moving into new directions the company’s business will not support.
