Disney CEO Bob Iger Addresses Staff in Virtual Town Hall
November 28, 2023
Following a tumultuous year marked by executive shake-ups, financial reports, and box office surprises, Disney CEO Bob Iger chose to emphasize the “blessed” and “fortunate” position of the entertainment company rather than sketching out future plans. His remarks were made during a recent virtual town hall meeting.
The session took place a little more than a year after Iger’s unexpected return to the top position at Disney. Bob Iger admitted that reprising the role of CEO was a more daunting task than he’d originally thought. The leader, who had been at the helm from 2005 to 2020, came back last November following the surprise dismissal of Bob Chapek.
Also present at the hour-long town hall were division chiefs such as Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, overseeing entertainment sectors like TV, film, and streaming, as well as Jimmy Pitaro of ESPN and Josh D’Amaro of the parks division. Among the many points discussed was ESPN’s upcoming direct-to-consumer service. According to Pitaro, the sports media company is currently researching the market and is set to launch its streaming-only service by 2025.
Addressing the current status of traditional linear assets within Disney’s portfolio, which he previously suggested might not be the company’s core focus, Iger pointed out that the company is working toward making its various businesses more efficient.
“I knew that there were myriad challenges that I would face coming back. I won’t say that it was easy, but I’ve never second guessed the decision to come back, and being back still feels great. I talk about optimism being an extraordinarily important trait of a leader, because no one wants to follow a pessimist. But I also believe that hopeless optimism doesn’t do anybody any good. I have, I think, real reason — and we have real reason as Disney — to be optimists, and it starts with the fact that we’re Disney. And Disney, as you know, is a brand unto itself, but it’s also an umbrella company that houses many assets and many great brands. So, reason to be optimistic No. 1 is that.”

In response to recent underwhelming performances at the box office, Iger expressed his belief that a vast quantity of creative output may have compromised the quality and thereby weakened results. He stressed that storytelling remains at the core of Disney’s mission.
Regrettably, the town hall did not unveil any significant updates regarding the company’s strategy, to the surprise of some employees. However, many were aware that the event would lean more toward a motivational talk than a platform for major announcements.
Iger also shared his enthusiasm for the company’s transition from a “fixing” to a “building” phase, evoking a sense of anticipation and positivity for the future.
