Disney Criticized for Extreme Food Prices at New Cake Shop

October 16, 2024

The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers is opening at Disney World in Orlando later this year. Yet, the prices for some food items are “shockingly offensive” for Disney fans.

Even though the cake shop is not open just yet, the menu was posted outside the door on the famous Boardwalk, where the shop is located at Disney World. Some of the items listed include $26 a slide for Gwendolyn’s Famous Earl’s Court Chocolate Cake and Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Roll cake for $22 per slice.

“These prices are obscene,” wrote one Reddit user. Another user stated, “$8 for a coke is shockingly offensive even for Disney World.”

Disney fans are exceedingly upset as the prices are higher than Cake Bake Shops in other locations. Even food places located near the cake shop in Disney World have lower prices.

“There are plenty of food and beverage locations where you can find lower-cost, but high-quality offerings including at restaurants right next door to this location at Disney’s BoardWalk,” Gavin Doyle, creator of the Mickey Visit Disney World Crowd Calendar, told the Daily Mail.

Disney World Struggles

Many Disney fans doubt the Cake Bake Shop, which is not owned by Disney, will last very long. One Redditor predicted the Cake Bake Shop “will be closed within ~2 years, especially once the novelty (if there’s any at all) wears off.” Another is “looking forward” to whatever opens after the shop ultimately closes.

Overall, Disney theme parks are struggling with lower consumer demand. In August, Disney reported that profit was down, which isn’t expected to change anytime soon. With consumers nervous about the economy, they are simply spending less on non-essentials like vacations.

In the face of criticism and decreased park attendance, Disney has been promoting lower-priced ticket options and bundle deals. The pricing packages could once again lure families back to the entrance gate, distracting them from ongoing economic issues, such as high prices and looming credit card payments.

The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers is in the spot previously occupied by the ESPN Club, which closed in 2020. The bakery will offer an assortment of pies, chocolate truffles, homemade fudge, cookies, and, of course, slices of cake.
