What Is the Dollar General Penny List? Here’s What Every Shopper Needs To Know
April 16, 2025
Dollar General’s Penny List offers some of the steepest discounts in retail. Savvy shoppers nationwide have discovered that it’s possible to score brand-name products for just 1 cent.
Dollar General’s Penny List is a weekly markdown list that includes discontinued, seasonal, or clearance items marked down to just $0.01. The list is typically updated every Tuesday, and once items are officially moved to the penny category in Dollar General’s system, store employees are instructed to remove them from shelves. However, if a customer finds a penny item on the sales floor before it’s pulled, the store is required to sell it at that price, per Delish.
These products can include anything from snacks and cleaning supplies to holiday decorations, beauty items, and more. The variety is unpredictable, which adds to the thrill for shoppers.
The Penny List isn’t published officially by Dollar General, but it frequently leaks through insider tips, employee forums, and savvy deal-hunting communities. Popular websites like The Freebie Guy and The Krazy Coupon Lady often publish updated lists weekly. These online communities are essential tools for staying current and maximizing your chances of finding penny items.
Past Penny List items, per The Krazy Coupon Lady, include:
- Banquet Original Crispy Fried Chicken, Assorted Pieces of Frozen Bone-In Chicken, 29 ounces
- Birds Eye Steamfresh Cut Green Beans, 10 ounces
- Blue Ribbon Classics Neapolitan Frozen Dessert, 48 ounces
- Jimmy Dean Biscuit Sandwiches, Bacon, Egg & Cheese, 4 count
- Screamin’ Sicilian Loaded Pan Mother of Meat, 23.2 ounces
- Yummy Dino Buddies All Natural Dinosaur-Shaped Chicken Breast Nuggets, 21 ounces
Shoppers Nationwide Rely on Dollar General for Everyday Goods
Dollar General selects its store locations with a focus on serving communities that are often overlooked by other retailers. According to the company, nearly 80% of its stores are located in towns with populations of 20,000 or fewer.
The company chooses its store locations strategically, positioning itself so that 75% of most Americans live within 5 miles of the retail franchise. For many communities, Dollar General is a local store where they can go to stock up on everyday essentials outside of retailers such as Walmart.
“At its core, our real estate strategy is simple. We seek to provide communities with value and convenience,” said Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “We believe the addition of each new store provides positive economic benefits as we continue to evolve our store formats to best serve our customers and extend our mission of serving others.”
To further enhance the shopping experience for communities they serve, Dollar General recently partnered with DoorDash Marketplace to accept SNAP/EBT payments. This concentrated effort by the retailer should double the company’s reach to over 35,000 stores.
In partnership with payments company Forage, Dollar General’s partnership with DoorDash Marketplace now allows SNAP recipients access to on-demand grocery delivery from Dollar General stores across 48 states. Therefore, customers can purchase SNAP-eligible products from Dollar General, including fresh and frozen foods, pantry essentials, and snacks, via the delivery app and have these goods delivered to their homes.
This partnership highlights Dollar General’s ongoing commitment to increasing accessibility and affordability for all customers. By enabling SNAP recipients to purchase essential groceries online and have them delivered through DoorDash, Dollar General ensures families have reliable access to fresh food, pantry staples, and everyday necessities. In doing so, the retailer continues to play an essential role in supporting the well-being of its customers.
