Dollar General Is Testing Same-Day Delivery With DoorDash

Dollar General is piloting a same-day delivery program along with DoorDash to offer its items on DoorDash’s Marketplace app and the web.

The new program will allow shoppers to purchase Dollar General items via DoorDash and have them quickly delivered. This news was shared by CEO Todd Vasos in a third-quarter earnings call.

“The learnings from that initiative and our own customer work have provided the foundation from which to test our own delivery offering with our unique customer base,” Vasos said. “We believe this offering will even further enhance the convenience our customers expect from Dollar General, while still providing the value they need. We are quickly learning and refining our process and, over time, we believe we can have delivery through the DG app available [in] the same number of stores as our DoorDash offering, which we expect to continue expanding over time.”

He continued, “We believe it’s time. We believe that we are doing it our way, meaning the DG way, and the way that our Dollar General customer wants it. And with that comes low cost to both our customers and to Dollar General. And there are always ways to offset some of those costs that will be inherent in the delivery piece with the vendor community and others.”

The program was soft-launched in September, per NBC News. Currently, Dollar General has 75 stores up and running with the program.

Details of Dollar General’s Same-Day Delivery Option

Dollar General’s same-day delivery option has a list of fees associated with placing an online order. These help pay the delivery drivers, known as dashers, who operate the platform, and provide the best service possible.

According to the retailer’s website, fees will be clearly stated on a customer’s checkout screen, so they know what the total is for their order before paying. Customers will also receive a receipt from DoorDash showing a breakdown of the order subtotal, applicable taxes, fees, and gratuity.

At this time, DoorDash does not accept SNAP/EBT as a form of payment. For problems with an existing Dollar General/DoorDash order, customers must use the “help” button on the app or website. Customers can not apply any existing coupons to a DoorDash same-day delivery order.

Customers are able to contact the shopper while the delivery is ongoing and after the order is completed. Any returns, damaged merchandise, or order problems should be directed to DoorDash. Dollar General Stores cannot accept a DoorDash receipt for any refunds or credits.
