Dollar General Store Staff Stage Walkout

The staff of a Dollar General Store in Wisconsin all walked off their jobs at the same time over the weekend. They claim they are “overworked” and “underpaid.”

USA Today reported that the entire staff of the Dollar General in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, walked off their jobs for three hours on Saturday, March 9. Signs were left explaining why they exited the store on its doors and windows.

Each sign shared different messages with customers looking to enter the store. “The store is closed,” one of the signs read. “The whole team has walked away due to a lack of appreciation, being overworked, and being underpaid.”

A second sign had two messages. One read, “We quit,” while the other thanked the store’s “amazing customers” and said, “We love you and will miss you!”

A third sign contained an explanation as to why the store’s employees all walked out at the same time. They cited the company’s “greed” in their message.

“We will not work for a company that does not stand behind in true honest form of what they want the world to see them as,” the note read. “We must take a stand for the community and not allow corporate greed to continue preventing people in need of help they need and could receive. Policies, processes and procedures need to change!”

WKOW spoke to the store manager, Trina Tribolet. She said Dollar General needs to “do better” for their employees and customers. She believes the stores should also do better for the communities in which they are built.

She also questioned the company’s policy of throwing out near-expired food. Employees believed the items were still usable and should have been donated instead of tossed.

In a statement to WKOW, Dollar General said that it makes donations through its Feeding America partnership “at 21 stores across the state.”

“The Mineral Point Dollar General store has donated nearly 7,500 pounds of food to local food banks such as Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin over the past twelve months,” the store said. “Food safety is a top priority for Dollar General and Feeding America members, therefore, DG stores are required to follow Feeding America donation policies.”
