Domino’s Drops New Cheeseburger Pizzas. Here’s What We Know About Them.

August 2, 2024

Domino’s has launched a new Cheeseburger Pizza in Japan, bringing an American twist to the Pacific island nation. The Cheeseburger Pizzas have been available in the United States since 2024, and now, Japan is getting its own version of the popular favorite. Let’s take a look at what we know about the new offering.

Domino’s in Japan Launches Cheeseburger Pizzas

Sora News is reporting that Domino’s in Japan will launch the Cheeseburger Pizzas as of August 9. Both the chicken and the beef types are offered in the Quattro style, which consists of four distinct toppings, so there are a total of eight fresh flavors to entice the palate.

Domino’s says it is eager to enter the burger market after a poll of 1,500 people found that more than 83 percent of them were fans of the food.

The outlet was invited to a tasting event announcing the launch of the new flavors, and the reporter claimed that the offering tasted “just like a cheeseburger!”

The Cheeseburger Pizza, Teriyaki Burger Pizza, Double Cheddar Burger Pizza, and Bacon Burger Pizza are the different variants that will be offered in Japan. What’s more, the variants will be only available until October.

These variants are different from the American version of the Cheeseburger Pizza. Per the announcement at the time, the American version is “made with a tasty ketchup-mustard sauce, American cheese, beef, fresh onions, diced tomatoes, shredded provolone and cheddar cheese.” At the same time, the pizza chain announced the launch of the chicken taco pizza, which is made with “American cheese, taco seasoning, grilled chicken, fresh onions, green peppers, diced tomatoes, provolone cheese and cheddar cheese.”

“We’re excited to add even more options to our lineup of delicious specialty pizzas,” said Art D’Elia, Domino’s executive vice president-chief marketing officer, at the time of the pizzas’ release in 2020. “Now friends and family who are craving a taco or cheeseburger on pizza night won’t be disappointed. Domino’s new taco and cheeseburger pizzas are sure to satisfy everyone.”

CEO Slammed ‘Value Meals’

Russell Weiner, the CEO of Domino’s Pizza, has drawn criticism for criticizing the concept of “value meals,” which are introduced by the chain’s rivals, including McDonald’s, Del Taco, and Burger King. Weiner argues that clients aren’t receiving the best value for their money and that the approach is nothing more than a gimmick.

Weiner reportedly made an effort to allay investors’ concerns after the company’s stock dropped 14%, marking “its worst one-day stock decline in more than a decade,” per Bloomberg.

The franchisee declared its intention to close up to 80 low-volume stores in Japan and reduce the total number of sites in France by 10 to 20 in mid-July. According to Weiner, the company has not changed its forecast for sales and profits, and the expansion of stores in countries like China and India helps to somewhat offset the worldwide slowdown.

Weiner claimed that this is primarily because of the products and services the company offers, which he is trying to market as being better than those of competitors. Discounts on specific menu items have been offered by chains such as McDonald’s for a restricted period of time. In contrast, Domino’s sells nearly every pair of items on its menu—including gourmet pizzas and loaded cheesy breads—for $6.99 each when you purchase two or more.

“It’s like ‘hey, the rest of our menu is expensive, but you can get this one thing you may or may not like cheaper,’” Weiner said. “That’s not value.”

He continued: “Just because something is cheaper, if it’s not what you want, it’s not valuable. If you want a big sandwich and you end up getting a little sandwich cheaper, you’re not happy.”
